Security

SecurityIn the on line world nothing is 100% safe and if someone tries to convince you otherwise we recommend you research further for more accurate information.

The reality is that on line information is within the reach of those who know how to look for it. But if that is the case, Why do we carry out transactions on line if they are not secure?

Many people are under the misconception that purchasing on the Internet is unsafe but in reality it can be safe if some simple security measures are taken.

Many Internet fraud cases occur when credit cards have been physically stolen and then used to make Internet purchases. Signatures are not required (yet) for on line purchases, so it is relatively simple to purchase using a stolen card, but not to steal the number itself off the Internet.

A web site should never send credit card numbers by email, nor store the number in a database for later use. The correct manner to send sensitive information is through the secure channels of the financial institution that processes the cards. If a customer later returns to the same site to make another purchase most likely he/she will not have to re-enter their personal information, but will have to reenter their credit card information.

The fact that information flows through the Internet and can potentially be seen by third parties is solved by data encryption. Data encryption methods used today are secure and efficient. When personal computers become fast enough to decipher code in minutes data encryption will change, but we are still several years away from such technology and have time for the development of different, improved methods for data encryption.

Some of the most startling examples of data encryption deciphering:

  • In 1997, Ian Goldberg, a student at the University of California in Berkeley was able to break 40-bits encryption in 3.5 hours using a network of 250 personal computers.
  • 10 months later, John Gilmore and Paul Kocher broke a 56-bits encryption in 56 hours using a computer specifically designed for a such a task which cost $250,000.

A web site's security is the responsibility of the Hosting provider. It is important that security features are kept updated and that the hosting providers have knowledge and experience in on line security.

PanamaCOM has a team of technical support staff that constantly updates their knowledge of new security issues and technologies through e-mail lists, books, magazines, and reliable Internet sources. We also constantly update the operating systems and programs that we use to avoid any potential security breaches.
