What is a "virtual catalog"?
Businesses can have their catalogs online, password protected if necessary, so that
customers can see their products and make online orders without having to send faxes or
make costly telephone calls. These catalogs can display different prices and discounts
depending on which client is viewing the site. Your virutal catalog can also have
sections for liquidating old stock.
Do my Latin American clients have Internet access?
The ubiquity of the personal computer is increasing every year. Prices are continually
going down for both the computers themselves, as well as for Internet access. If some
of your clients still do not have Internet access, it is likely that they will have it
soon. (Statistics)
Will my traveling salesmen benefit from e-commerce?
One of the biggest problems facing traveling salesmen is submitting orders for products
they have sold while on the road. This problem is resolved if the salesmen are able to
check inventory and submit orders via the Internet.
What about dishonest competition and security?
The reality is that the more we depend on electronic information, the more our privacy
is able to be reduced. There are various ways to deal with this problem, one of which
is the use of passwords which restrict access to your Web site. This is a good start in
protecting yourself, but it is only part of the security puzzle. The fact of the matter
is that no system can be 100% secure. However, there are different ways of creating
e-commerce Web sites. For example, if you don't feel comfortable displaying prices
online you could simply show pictures of your products without prices.
Are you an ISP (Internet Service Provider)?
With the quantity of large companies which already provide Internet access here in
Panama, we decided that we could better serve our customers by focusing on hosting,
publicity, design and marketing of Web sites. Therefore, at this time we do not offer
Internet access.
Do you only offer Web hosting to businesses?
We offer Web hosting to businesses and individuals alike.

What if I already have my own site and only want hosting?
You may use our hosting services for your existing Web site. Design and hosting
are two separate services which we offer, though they can be bundled as
well.
What's the difference between PanamaCOM's Web servers and those of other local
ISPs?
A lot. Our servers are used exclusively for hosting Web sites. We do not share our
bandwidth, which is the predominant factor in the speed of data transmissions.
ISPs generally share their Internet bandwidth between hosting, their Internet users, and
various other services.
How will potential customers find my Web site?
One way is through various search engines such as Yahoo!, Google, Altavista, WebCrawler,
etc. Another important factor is the effective and correct promotion of the site
online, as well as physically. We know how to market your virtual strategy and position
your your pages well in the most important search engines.
What is a "domain"?
A domain is the name that is used to access a particular server. This server may offer
various services such as Web pages and email, among others. What really happens when
you enter a domain name, www.panama.com, for example, in your browser, is that a system
known as DNS (Domain Name System) is used to translate the domain name to the numeric
name of the server (IP address). The domain name is simply a way for people to easily
remember how to access various servers, as names are much easier to remember than long
strings of numbers.
How long does it take to register a domain?
Domain name registration is practically instantaneous. If the name is not already being
used by someone else, the necessary information is collected, the fees are paid and
everything happens electronically. Fast, that is.
Who is responsible for registering a domain?
We can handle the registration of a domain for you, or if you prefer, you may do it
yourself, directly.
Can I register a domain that ends in something other than ".pa"?
The ".pa" extension represents the country of Panama. Generally speaking you may
register a domain with an extension of a different country (".uk", ".cr", ".mx", etc.),
provided the name you want has not already been registered by someone else. However,
there are some countries which will not allow the registration of a name if the person
or business is not physically located in that country.
If I register a new domain name and host it with PanamaCOM, how can I avoid
interruptions in access to my existing Web site during the transition?
While the changes are being carried out it is best to leave your existing site in place
and functioning until the PanamaCOM server has been configured and the changes in the
DNS system have propogated globally, which usually occurs within 24 to 72 hours.
